White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci has admitted that the federal government is considering redefining what it means to be fully vaccinated against the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19).
“We’re using the terminology now ‘keeping your vaccinations up to date,’ rather than what ‘fully vaccinated’ means,” said Fauci during a meeting hosted by the National Institutes of Health. He elaborated further by saying that keeping vaccinations up to date means getting a third shot of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, or a second shot of the vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson. Fauci made this announcement in response to the latest news coming out of Israel stating that the country’s government plans to update the definition of “fully vaccinated” to mean people who have received two COVID-19 vaccine booster doses.
“We need to find out what the durability of protection of the third shot is before we start thinking about the fourth shot,” said Fauci.
Kristen Nordlund, a spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), contradicted Fauci by claiming that the definition of “fully vaccinated” has not really changed. “The technical definition of ‘fully vaccinated’ – two doses of an mRNA vaccine or one dose of the J&J vaccine – has not changed,” said Nordlund. “Individuals are considered fully vaccinated once they have received their primary series.”
Jeff Zients, the White House’s coronavirus response coordinator, reiterated Nordlund’s claims. “Someone is considered fully vaccinated if they receive their primary series of vaccines,” he said. “That has not changed and we do not have any plans to change that.”
Fauci’s comments came after the CDC recommended that people take the vaccine booster made by Pfizer five months after the first two-dose regimen, which is one month earlier than the agency previously recommended. For the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson boosters, the CDC’s recommendations for when to get boosters remain at six months and two months, respectively.
“As we have done throughout the pandemic, we will continue to update our recommendations to ensure the best possible protection for the American people,” claimed CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky in a statement. “Following the FDA’s [Food and Drug Administration] authorizations, today’s recommendations ensure people are able to get a boost of protection in the face of [the post-vaccine omicron variant] and increasing cases across the country.”
In line with the changing definition of “fully vaccinated,” government officials have also started changing how they discuss COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Instead of calling them “mandates,” they now prefer to use the term “requirements.”
“Mandates – that’s a radioactive word,” said Fauci during an interview with CNBC. “Requirements – people seem to respond better to that – they work. We are never going to get out of this outbreak if we still have 50 million people who for reasons that are still very, very difficult to understand, refuse to get vaccinated when you have a virus that’s killed 800,000 Americans and caused 50 million infections.”
“So, if people still do not want to get vaccinated, sometimes you have to, for the common good, make requirements,” he continued. (Related: Fauci dismisses people’s freedom as he calls for nationwide vaccine mandate.)
